Introduction
     KURZWELLEN is a direct evolutionary step forward from PROZESSION.  The concept of using "plus-minus" notation (+/-/=) to indicate the type of variation to be used from event to event started in the earlier work, but instead of sampling from a sound pool of Stockhausen's own works, here KURZWELLEN adds the "x-factor" of giving each performer a shortwave radio to use as a secondary instrument and sampling source.  In other words, the performers search for desirable sounds on the radio (usually abstract, "noisy" sounds) and then replicate them on their instruments with variations in register, volume, duration or rhythmic density ("segmentation").  Additionally, KURZWELLEN has instructions for players to form synchronous duo, trio and quartet events, where players play together in tandem, or alternatively trade short events with one another.  PROZESSION had loose recommendations for ad-libbed group interaction like this, but KURZWELLEN specifically sets them in the score.

Shortwave Radio:
     It might be worthwhile to examine how shortwave radio works and how it sounds in order to make it easier to follow the development of the piece and distinguish the radio sounds from the performers' instrumental contributions.  Shortwave is able to receive long-distance broadcasts from around the globe because it's wavelength can bounce off the atmosphere ionosphere (and go around the curve of the Earth).  Some frequencies work better at night, and some work better during the daytime.  Additionally, unlike the Internet, it is impossible for a government to censor content. Some of the content available on shortwave radio includes amateur radio stations, utility stations (weather, sea conditions, military, news), number stations (a voice reading out numbers), private 2-way communications, and general audience stations such as Radio Taiwan, Voice of America, Radio France Internationale, BBC World Service, etc...  But most importantly: "shortwave transmissions often have bursts of distortion, and "hollow" sounding loss of clarity at certain aural frequencies, altering the harmonics of natural sound and creating at times a strange "spacey" quality due to echoes and phase distortion." Score
     The score is in 5 individual parts, 2 pages for each instrument (piano, tam-tam, viola and electronium, as well as a combined score for the sound mixer.  The electronium is a kind of accordian-synthesizer, which is often used with reverb and volume effects.  The possibilities for tam-tam and microphone were explored by Stockhausen's group of performers in MIKROPHONIE I.
     The parts for KURZWELLEN are written as symbolic instructions for creating 128 "events", but the initial event is usually a shortwave radio transmission.  The players are instructed to avoid unmodulated ("clear") speech or music while looking for a desirable transmission. 

    Each player can start at any time by quietly searching stations until a desirable one is found.  The player's next event is to assume that sound in rhythm, timbre, "melodic contour" and envelope (changes in volume).  The radio events are very rarely quoted verbatim.  In fact many times the speech/music element of the radio transmission is ignored and the player only replicates the "noise" elements.

     "Plus-minus" notation (below) indicates that the event (either on an instrument or as another radio sound) must also be more, less than or the same in one of 4 musical parameters:

+ Higher register / Louder dynamic / Longer duration / More segmented rhythm
- Lower / Quieter / Shorter / Less segmented
= Same (or similar) register / dynamics / duration / timbre / No. of segments
Longer or shorter duration refers to the length of an event.  Changing the "segmentation" is basically changing the number of notes in a phrase without changing the melodic shape, typically by dividing long tones into several shorter ones or playing tremolos. 

     Each symbol is applied to one parameter.  When there are multiple (stacked) symbols, they are applied to different parameters. A "+" and a "-" stacked in the same event could even be applied simultaneously to the same parameter by alternating or otherwise mixing the two values.  All symbols can be reassigned to different parameters for each event unless the score has a box or bracket around/next to a symbol sequence, in which case that symbol row is to be applied to the same parameter.  Any parameters which have not been chosen for transformation remain the same.

     A player can also choose to abandon his own event and instead use his next symbol on another person's current event (after that event has finished).  He mirrors that event just as he would a radio event.  In fact, a player's very first event could be either a free radio event or a variation of another person's event.  Each player also separates his events with silences of various lengths.

     Droning seems to be encouraged since Stockhausen asks that each player must play a VERY long event (> 1 min.) at least once during a performance (this long event should be during a "+" event, followed by a shorter "-" event).

     A player can use his shortwave radio (with or without his main instrument) at any time in an event.  In this case, the parameters of segmentation and dynamic can be controlled by working the volume or tuning knob rhythmically or otherwise.  Other elements such as rhythm, melodic shape, etc... do not have to be as closely followed as when using a main instrument (this rule actually results in some players playing long stretches of just radio noise, after which they switch back to their instrument).  A player should balance instrumental events with radio events evenly.

       The above instructions are more or less similar to those in PROZESSION, but KURZWELLEN also has a few additional symbols to trigger non-spontaneous group formations (duos, trios, quartets). 

       For the top set of 3 "synchronous-signs", a leader signals a player (or players) to rhythmically follow him (additional elements such as timbre, melody, etc.. are often emulated as well).  This group follows the leader in the number of events specified after the arrow symbol, while applying their own plus-minus symbols.  For the bottom set of 3 "alternating-signs", players take turns (in a repeating sequence) playing their events for the number specified, usually as "echoes" of the leader.  After the number of synchronous or alternating events required have been played, the leader signals the group's dissipation with a shortwave radio event.

     When a player reaches a "W in a box", he must repeat that event (applying the event symbol each time) until all players have arrived at the same place, after which a group event occurs.  This keeps the ensemble more or less "on the same page".  The last symbol of the work for each player is treated as if there were a boxed W above it (holding an event until everybody catches up).

     The score mentions at the very end that other "corresponding instruments" can also be used to play KURZWELLEN (but the tam-tam would be "difficult to replace").
 
     Finally (and this is not really a "score" element, but worth mentioning here), the personalities of the players themselves obviously contribute more to the substance of this work than say, in a typically-notated instrumental work.  It might be worth quoting some of Stockhausen's own remarks on each of the players (from a 1969 sketchbook, and transcribed by Richard Toop in "Stockhausen's Secret Theatre - Unfinished Projects"):

Analysis
     What follows is my rough attempt to analyze the KURZWELLEN performance on Stockhausen Edition 13 from 1969 based on the group interactions.  Because of the aleatory nature of the work, there's no guarantee that this is correct (or even very close), but it may be interesting as a kind of listening companion.  Some synchronous group events were nowhere to be found on main instruments, so I assumed they were at least partially expressed with shortwave events.

Recordings
     KURZWELLEN was first released on a double LP with 2 performances, one from Bremen in 1968 (released on the Stockhausen Edition 61 CD), and a later one from 1969 in Cologne (Stockhausen Edition 13).  The interesting thing here (that Stockhausen mentions in the liner notes) is that early on in both performances the ensemble tuned in a 4-note timpani motive on the shortwave radio (somewhat like Beethoven's 5th Symphony "fate" motif), though the performers developed this motif differently on each performance.  The ensembles for both performances were the same as for the 1967 recording of PROZESSION: Aloys Kontarsky (piano & SW radio), Harald Bojé (electronium & SW), Johannes Fritsch (viola with contact mike & SW), and Fred (Alfred) Alings with Rolf Gehlhaar (tam-tam, microphone & SW), Stockhausen on sound mix, filters and spatial distribution.

  OPUS 1970 - KURZWELLEN MIT BEETHOVEN (Stockhoven - Beethausen KURZWELLEN)
     1970 was Beethoven's 200th birthday, and Stockhausen (among many other contemporary composers) was asked to contribute something to the celebration.  Instead of giving a lecture of some kind, he instead decided to have his touring group, "Gruppe Stockhausen", give a concert.  They performed KURZWELLEN, but instead of using shortwave radios as the secondary generators, he created tape collages of Beethoven recordings, modified with ring modulation, reverb, low-pass filters and other electronic effects.  In order to obtain speech textures, Stockhausen also included recordings of himself reciting Beethoven's "Heiligenstadt Testament" (a long letter written by Beethoven - never sent - describing the depression and isolation he felt from losing his hearing) and subjected this to the same kinds of electronic treatments.  Each player received 1 of 4 different tape collages and could tune them in as if they came from a Beethoven "radio station from space."

     This version is pretty interesting because there's no "noise" (radio interference) present on the tapes, so Stockhausen's players had no choice but to approximate actual melodic material.  However, it's still only a few times that more than a few of Beethoven's scored notes are quoted.  Most of the time the players are able to take brief motifs and transmogrify them into unidentifiable abstraction.  However some well-known Beethoven figures do surface, most notably quotes from Piano Sonata 8 ("Pathetique"), Piano Sonata 23 ("Appassionata"), the Triple Concerto and the 9th Symphony's 4th movement ("Ode to Joy").  The performers are the same as for the previous performances.

of making contact with levels of consciousness which in the past
were closed to us (or accessible only in extremely short moments
of intuitive inspiration) is becoming a reality.

Sound Impressions
     Despite Stockhausen's perhaps somewhat mystical claims of KURZWELLEN's virtues, it's a pretty difficult work to follow and enjoy for most people unfamiliar with abstract sound textures.  Multiple challenges exist, such as the nowadays rarely-heard shortwave radio noises as well as the rarely-used electronium and tam-tam. In works which rely heavily on performer choice such as this one, I personally like to hear the interactions of the individual personalities, and it took multiple listenings to unravel the layers present on these recordings.  It's definitely recommended to become familiar with PROZESSION and MIKROPHONIE I beforehand, to get to know the instrumental sounds. Playing around with a shortwave radio yourself is also very illuminating.  On the other hand, it is possible to just enjoy KURZWELLEN as a portrait of the cosmic ether, with 6 "astro-audio-nauts" journeying through unknown soundscapes.  Even after listening to KURZWELLEN off and on for over 20 years, I'm still able to "tune in on" new things on every listen.

     This is the first piece in Stockhausen's compositional body to use radio as an element.  John Cage had used radio as a sound source in "Imaginary Landscape IV" (1951), but in that piece the station numbers are dictated in the score.   In contrast, KURZWELLEN directs the performer to (audibly) search the short-wave frequency spectrum and choose a station based on compositional intuition.  Aesthetically, the difference is that Cage's work attempts to validate all chance sounds as being "authentic", while Stockhausen's work uses radio as a launching pad to generate timbres for transformation.  The radio sounds chosen in KURZWELLEN also focus on "in between" sounds rather than the clear signals of "Imaginary Landscape IV", which makes a big difference from a musical standpoint.

     On a biographical note, the radio was newly invented during Stockhausen's childhood, and Michael Kurtz' Stockhausen biography reports that his mother sometimes tried talking to the voices coming from the radio.  However, she became disturbed when the voices did not answer back.  Perhaps Stockhausen's use of shortwave radio in KURZWELLEN is his way of having a "conversation" with the airwaves.  The final step along this path, AUS DEN SIEBEN TAGEN, would have Stockhausen literally communicating with the vibrations of the universe.

     MONTAGs-ABSCHIED is the Farewell, or closing work, for MONTAG AUS LICHT (Monday from Light), the 3rd-premiered opera of Stockhausen's 7-part, 29-hour musical-dramatic work, LICHT, based on the 7 days of the week.  LICHT has 3 main archetype characters, and Monday is the character EVE's day.  EVE's signature instrument is the bassett-horn and flute, and so it's quite fitting that both the Greeting (MONTAGs GRUSS) and Farewell feature those two instruments respectively.

Development
     The genesis of MONTAGs ABSCHIED comes from the opera MONTAG AUS LICHT's last  scene, ENTFÜHRUNG (Abduction), which is part of Act 3's EVAs ZAUBER (EVE's Magic).  In Abduction, a Pied Piper named AVE, represented by a flautist, entrances a children's choir and leads them "into the clouds", while the choir sing a repeating refrain:

    MONDAY - Born from LIGHT - Ceremony and Magic.   

     The refrain melody is based on the EVE nuclear formula (a simplified version of the EVE character's representative melody-formula and derived from the LICHT 3-layer super-formula).  It is performed by the flautist and 2-part children's choir (below) in 26 cycles, each time with elaborate variations and ornamentation in the piccolo flute.  This scene also includes parts for synthesizers, percussion and tape (sampled concrete sounds).

MONTAGs ABSCHIED
     "Monday Farewell" is a tape-manipulated version of "Abduction" consisting of the children's choir part (sung by soprano Kathinka Pasveer on 2 tracks (lower and higher voice)) and the piccolo flute part (also Pasveer).  Additionally, dense samples of birdsong (44 different species) are interspersed throughout MONTAGs ABSCHIED.  In the latter part of the work, Pasveer sings (in German):

     The EVE-children are abducted - by music - into higher worlds - with green clouds.    

     The tape-recording process of MONTAGs ABSCHIED was designed so that on an aural level, the piccolo and soprano voices "ascend into the clouds" as well.  The piccolo flute and soprano voices are transposed upwards over a duration of 28 minutes so that they join the "natural" (un-modulated) bird sounds in the higher sonic stratosphere.

     To do this, the piccolo part from "Abduction" was first re-recorded with Pasveer playing with an initial tempo of 107 and gradually slowing down (ritardando) to 40.  This increased the duration of the original 10.5 minutes of Abduction to 56 minutes (which Pasveer played live and unedited).  Pasveer then sang the two children's choir parts (low and high) with the same ritardando as the piccolo part.  These soprano vocal lines in the score are also transposed upwards (irregularly) every 2 cycles so that the first note of each cycle-pair follows a sequence of the 13 EVE nuclear tones (12 pitch row of the EVE formula, plus octave note).

     This 56-minute recording was then copied to a second tape with a gradual accelerando in playback speed (from 50% (half-speed) up to 160%), resulting in Monday Farewell's 28 minutes.  This is basically a rhythmically-lengthened and melodically-rising Abduction.

     After some equalization (to reduce the shrillness from speeding up the tape I imagine) the birdsong samples and Pasveer's sung text (starting from 18'25") were added. 

Performance
     MONTAGs ABSCHIED is played as a 4-channel tape piece as "exit music" to the opera MONTAG AUS LICHT.  The exit foyer space is "immersed in slowly floating clouds as the audience departs."  A sculpture of the female flautist (AVE, the Pied Piper) with 2 children kneeling at her feet is in the center of the room (top photo), while the walls are adorned with photographs of the Pied Piper (Kathinka Pasveer in all cases so far) in 12 playing poses corresponding to the 12 pitches of the EVE nuclear tones (pitches of the EVE formula).

Sound Impressions
     This piece effectively lifts the intricate piccolo flute part of Abduction into a higher level (both aurally and spiritually).  The tape speed acceleration is extremely subtle, and because the rate of ascension is so slow, it doesn't sound forced or "artificial".  It's only after several minutes that one realizes that the flute and vocal parts are becoming a bit "other-worldly" (quite fittingly).  Also the addition of the birdsong samples (which remain unmodulated throughout) help to blur the tape modulation of the other parts.  By the time Pasveer's vocal insert begins, the recorded flute and voices have effectively merged with the birdsong.

Work No. 246/Opus 59, extract 1
     QUITT ("Even") is a work for 3 micro-tonal instruments which slowly ascend (at roughly the same rate) for 2 minutes, after which they move micro-tonally and non-synchronously between A sharp (sharp 25 cents) and E flat, sometimes creating frequency beating patterns and applying different timbres (flute can flutter-tongue, clarinet can circular-breathe).  At 4'41", one player (the trumpet in the recorded version) glisses down and then gradually slows down while playing a wide 2 note tremolo.  The score was first developed in 1989 as a graphic score in 3 colored pitch lines (above).

     In 2003 additional details were added and developed in rehearsals with Kathinka Pasveer (alto flute), Suzanne Stephens (clarinet) and Marco Blaauw (piccolo trumpet).  In a live performance, the players approach one another until they are very close at 4'33" (the dense section), immediately after which the trumpet signals the beginning of his descent and walks away from the flute and clarinet performers.  The trumpeter and the wind players are "even".

YPSILON
Work No. 247, 248, 249/Opus 59, extract 2, 3, 4
      YPSILON (the Greek character for "variable quantity, or indeterminate factor" according to Stockhausen) is a micro-tonal solo work derived from a pitch range-compressed version of the EVE formula layer of the LICHT super-formula (in its original state an octave plus a minor 3rd).  The performer must develop the instrumental ability to play an evenly spaced micro-tonal scale of 16 distinct intervals in as small a pitch range as possible.  The graphic score is written as graduations (steps) of these 16 micro-intervals.  In Kathinka Pasveer's version for flute, the melody is "vertically compressed" so that the original EVE pitch range fits roughly inside a minor 3rd interval, and the modified EVE formula is stretched out to 9 minutes.  This kind of performer realization is in contrast to Xi, in that in YPSILON the pitch range is indeterminate, but the number of scale steps are determined (in Xi, the pitch range is determined and the number of scale steps is indeterminate).  The idea of compressing/expanding the pitch ranges of melodies was previously explored in MANTRA (expanded piano scales) and SIRIUS (electronic manipulation), but in Xi and YPSILON, new microtonal instrument fingerings are used to realize the compressions.
     Additionally, the score indicates places where the performer shakes Indian bells worn on her limbs, or where she jumps and stamps the floor with a bell-adorned foot, possibly as an analogue to LICHT's "colored noise" gestures.  YPSILON also retains the EVE formula's other gestural elements, such as vocalizations and kissing noises.  The score indicates 7 Formel-Glied (formula segments) which correspond to the 7 segments of the EVE formula.

     MONTAGs-GRUSS is the Greeting, or opening work, for MONTAG AUS LICHT (Monday from Light), the 3rd-premiered opera of Stockhausen's 7-part, 29-hour musical-dramatic work, LICHT, based on the 7 days of the week.  LICHT has 3 main archetype characters, and Monday is the character EVE's day.  EVE's signature instruments are the basset-horn and flute, and so it's quite fitting that the Greeting and Farewell (MONTAGs-ABSCHIED) feature those two instruments respectively.  Before talking about MONTAGs GRUSS, though, it's probably good to go over Xi first.

Xi
     MONTAG's GRUSS had its birth in the solo instrumental work Xi (from the Greek letter, meaning "unknown quantity").  Designed for instruments with the ability to play "bent" notes microtonally (ruling out the traditional acoustic piano, vibraphone, accordion, etc...), one of the challenges of Xi is to develop techniques for keyed wind and brass instruments to play "in between" adjacent notes of the chromatic scale, with not one, but several steps (up to 12!) from note to note.  This is typically done with non-traditional key fingerings as well as embouchure techniques.  The basset-horn and flute-specific scores for Xi include the techniques and fingerings developed by Suzanne Stephens and Kathinka Pasveer to play the micro-intervals necessary for those 2 instruments.  I imagine for slide guitar or bowed string instruments (violins, etc...), Xi wouldn't require as much instrumental research (only a very steady hand).  A theremin version would be very interesting.

     The melodic content of Xi is derived from Stockhausen's 3-layer melodic super-formula for LICHT.  This super-formula is used to define many aspects of LICHT, from the melodic content of a single measure to the formal structure of all 29 hours.  In Xi's case, Stockhausen took the MONDAY segment (first 3 measures) of the super-formula and created a single melodic line by criss-crossing notes and fragments from layer to layer, and indicating the layer-jumps through microtonal interval-based glissandi.  This brief fragment was then stretched out through rhythmic augmentation (expansion of note durations) to 9 minutes.  Stockhausen would revisit this technique of jumping from formula to formula (staff to staff) to create a glissando-based hybrid melody in the HELIKOPTER-STREICHQUARTETT.

First part of Xi for unspecified microtonal instrument. Stockhausen states, "glissandi with as many micro-steps as possible". The 5th and 6th notes have bottom-pointing note flags which indicate vocalizing (but without glissando) while playing.  The notes enclosed in the sagging ties (such as the 10th note) are single staccatto pitches whose placement during the gliss are aleatoric (free-choice).

This excerpt from the flute version of Xi shows the fingerings developed by Kathinka Pasveer.  This passage requires some pitch bending through embouchure only as well as "colored noise" (the crossed note-heads) which basically means upper wind harmonics (~2 octaves higher).

     On a very basic structural level, much of the middle section is concerned with flutter-tongue textures.  This is followed by a section exploring "colored noise" which is obtained through finger and embouchure-produced upper harmonics.  Finally, trilling is applied to a long glissando.  Another aspect which is sometimes briefly explored here is the use of contrasting glissandi or held tones between vocalized sung tones and simultaneous basset-horn tones, which creates "growling" difference tones (beating).

     This kind of performer realization is in contrast to YPSILON, in that in Xi, the pitch range is determined and the number of scale steps is indeterminate (in YPSILON the pitch range is indeterminate, but the number of scale steps (16) are determined).

MONTAGs-GRUSS
     From a purely melodic standpoint, MONTAG's GRUSS is the basset-horn version of Xi slowed down from 8.5 minutes to 34 minutes, with 3 additional tempo-reduced layers of the same melody transposed down in pitch 3 times.  Because the tempos are reduced, the number of micro-steps is increased in some places from 7 to 12 (which of course meant that new fingerings had to be discovered for the additional micro-tones).  In a way, the 3 additional layers create a 4-part harmonized Xi chord melody, but there are 3 important factors which make the work more interesting on a smaller time-scale as well.

Held Tones vs Sliding Tones
     For each of of the 36 glissandi in the Xi melody, some of the 3 lowest layers are altered so that the 2 notes indicated are held from one to the next, instead of sliding. This, with the transposed element of the layers, creates an interesting "foreground-background" effect.

Tape Manipulation
     To create the 4 layers of MONTAGs GRUSS, Stockhausen slowed down the tape playback speed to obtain the lower registers.  The lowest layer is dramatically lower than the bottom range of the basset-horn (or any horn for that matter).  Technology exists to digitally pitch-shift notes downwards, but inevitably the sound is cluttered by unwanted artifacts.  By using the tape-speed method, Stockhausen retained all of the frequency information in each manipulation.  This is the same reason many audiophiles prefer vinyl LPs to CDs.

The method of creating these layers is a bit painstaking but is basically as follows:
  1. Record Xi layer 4.
  2. Reduce playback speed of the above version and overdub Xi layer 3 (played live at the reduced tempo)
  3. Reduce playback speed of the above 2-layer version and overdub Xi layer 2 (played live at a more reduced tempo)
  4. Reduce playback speed of the above 3-layer version and overdub Xi layer 1 (played live at an even more reduced tempo)
The result is that the final version has an un-manipulated ("live") recording of Xi on Layer 1, and 3 speed-reduced versions on layers 2-4.

Water
     Finally, sound samples of running and splashing water ("crashing surf") were over-dubbed at various points of the final recording.

Performance
     MONTAGs GRUSS can be played as a 4-channel tape piece as "entrance music" to the opera MONTAG AUS LICHT.  In this case, the foyer space "is bathed in greenish wave, in which waves of sunshine are broken, bent and mirrored."  A sculpture of a female basset-horn player is in the center of the room, while the walls are adorned with photographs of the sculpture subject (Suzanne Stephens in all cases so far) in 12 playing poses corresponding to the 12 pitches of the inverted EVE nuclear tones (pitches of the EVE formula). MONTAGs GRUSS can also be played as a concert piece where a live basset-horn player accompanies the 3 speed-manipulated layers on tape.

Sound Impressions
     This piece has a very warm and woody tranquil feel to it. I'm glad that Stockhausen used the tape-speed method of creating the layers since the key noises and breath sounds of Suzanne Stephens sound much more organic that way.  The cascade of "colored noise" in the latter part of the piece sounds like winds from an other planet.  One thing I noticed is that when I try to sing the micro-tones myself, I discover how much space there is (alot!) between 2 adjacent chromatic notes.
     In the spirit of Stockhausen's practice of playing live works on top of his electronic/tape works (such as in FREITAG AUS LICHT, MICHAELION and ORCHESTER-FINALISTEN), I sometimes like to listen to MONTAG's GRUSS at the same time as KLANG 4: HIMMELS-TÜR (Heaven's Door), since the latter's percussive wood tones provide a nice counterpoint to the basset-horn's burnished tones (though I'm not sure Stockhausen would have approved of me taking this liberty...).
